Dewatering is not just a one-step process. While it plays an essential role in keeping excavation and construction sites dry and safe, the job doesn't end once the water has been pumped out. Before that water is discharged into storm drains or other approved discharge points, it should be tested to help ensure it won't negatively impact nearby waterways, aquatic habitats, or surrounding ecosystems.

Water Quality Is Just as Important as Water Removal
A common misconception about dewatering is that it's simply about moving water from one place to another. In reality, our goal is to leave every site better than we found it. That's why the quality of the discharged water is just as important as the volume being removed.
Depending on the site conditions, surface water may contain sediment, elevated or low pH levels, or other contaminants that require treatment before it can be safely discharged. Testing the water gives us the knowledge and understanding needed to determine the most effective filtration approach. It allows us to make informed decisions throughout the dewatering process, ensuring the water is treated appropriately before being released.
Protecting the Environment and Staying Compliant
Water quality can change throughout the course of a project, which is why routine monitoring is an important part of the dewatering process. Parameters such as pH measure whether the water is acidic or alkaline, while turbidity indicates how clear the water is by measuring the amount of suspended sediment and fine particles. Together, these measurements provide a better understanding of the condition of the water and help determine whether it is suitable for discharge.
